What the platform had to solve
A research subscription business has a narrow but unforgiving software problem: the product is the content, so everything else — authentication, entitlement, billing, delivery — has to work invisibly and never wrongly. A subscriber who cannot reach material they have paid for, or a lapsed subscriber who can, are both direct commercial failures rather than bugs.
What made it difficult
Entitlement has to be exactly right
In a subscription research product, access control is the commercial model. Both failure directions — a paying member locked out, a lapsed one still reading — cost real money.
Billing state and access state must agree
Subscription lifecycle events happen asynchronously in the payment provider. Keeping platform access consistent with billing status means handling those events reliably rather than checking on login.
Content delivery under gating
Material has to be restricted to entitled members while the platform remains fast and navigable for them — gating that degrades the reading experience defeats the product.
