TV & Streaming App Development

Television is the one screen most engineering teams have never built for. There is no pointer, no keyboard and no scroll — only a directional pad, a ten-foot viewing distance and certification requirements that differ on every platform.

Capabilities

What this covers

Roku and Fire TV applications

Channel and app builds for the two largest streaming platforms, each with its own toolchain, layout model and submission process.

Remote-first navigation

Focus management and spatial navigation designed for a directional pad, where every reachable element must be reachable in a predictable order.

Ten-foot interface design

Type sizes, contrast and hit targets calibrated for a screen viewed from across a room rather than at arm's length.

Video delivery and playback

Adaptive bitrate streaming, DRM where content requires it, and playback behaviour that recovers from bandwidth drops without stalling.

Catalogue and content integration

Connecting the app to your existing content management, entitlement and subscription systems rather than duplicating them.

Platform certification

Preparing builds against each platform's certification requirements, which are stricter and more prescriptive than mobile app review.

How we work

From first conversation to running software

  1. 01

    Map platforms and constraints

Which devices you need to reach, what each one's hardware allows, and where their certification requirements conflict.

  2. 02

    Design the focus model

Navigation mapped as a grid before any visual design, because on TV the reachability of every element is the interface.

  3. 03

    Build and test on devices

Iterative delivery tested on actual hardware, including older, slower devices where performance ceilings are real.

  4. 04

    Certify and publish

Certification submission per platform, then the release cadence each store requires.

TV & Streaming Apps: common questions

Ask us
  • 01

Which TV platforms can you build for?

Roku and Fire TV are the two we are most often asked for, alongside Android TV and smart TV platforms. Each has a different toolchain and its own certification requirements, so the right question early is usually which devices your audience actually owns rather than how many platforms you can cover.

  • 02

How is building for TV different from mobile or web?

There is no pointer and no keyboard. Every element has to be reachable through a directional pad in an order that feels predictable, which makes focus management the central design problem rather than an accessibility detail. On top of that, the viewing distance is roughly ten feet, so type and hit targets scale up considerably, and TV hardware is often several generations behind a current phone.

  • 03

Can our existing web or mobile app be ported to TV?

The back end, content catalogue and entitlement logic usually carry across with little change. The interface generally does not — an interface built for touch or a pointer rarely survives translation to a directional pad, and attempting it tends to produce something worse than a purpose-built app.

  • 04

Do you handle video streaming and DRM?

Yes. That covers adaptive bitrate delivery so playback degrades gracefully when bandwidth drops, and DRM integration where your content licensing requires it.

  • 05

How long does platform certification take?

It varies by platform and by how much the app touches payments, content rights or accessibility requirements. We prepare builds against each platform's published requirements before submission rather than treating certification as a final step, because the requirements are prescriptive enough to shape architecture.
