Education Software Development

Education software has an unusually wide user base — students, teachers, administrators and parents, with very different needs and confidence levels — and load that arrives in predictable, brutal peaks.

What makes this sector different

Constraints specific to education

The problems that shape software here, and that generic engineering tends to discover late.

Load arrives in spikes the calendar dictates

Enrolment week, assessment deadlines and results day concentrate a term's traffic into hours. Capacity planning is unusually predictable and unusually unforgiving.

Accessibility is a legal requirement, not a preference

Public-sector education is bound by accessibility legislation in most jurisdictions. Building to WCAG from the start costs little; retrofitting an inaccessible platform is a rebuild.

Student data carries specific protections

Student records are regulated separately from general personal data in many jurisdictions, and platforms serving younger learners carry additional restrictions on collection and advertising.

Four user groups, one system

A learner, an instructor, an administrator and a parent need genuinely different interfaces over shared data. Collapsing them into one experience serves none of them well.

What we build

Software we build for education

Learning platforms

Course delivery, progress tracking and content management, with standards-based interoperability where your institution requires it.

Assessment and examination systems

Timed assessment, submission handling and marking workflows built for integrity and for graceful behaviour when a candidate's connection drops mid-attempt.

Student information systems

Enrolment, records, scheduling and reporting, integrated with the finance and identity systems institutions already run.

Accessible-by-default interfaces

Keyboard operability, screen-reader semantics, captioning support and contrast decided at design time across every surface.

Regulatory context

Standards that apply to software in this sector

What the software has to be built to satisfy. Which of these apply to you depends on your jurisdiction, your data and your customers.

These are the standards we design and build to meet. Certification or attestation of your organisation is a separate exercise, carried out by a qualified assessor — we can support that process with documentation and evidence, but we do not certify it.

Questions

Education: common questions

Something specific to your operation?

Send it over — sector questions are the ones we most like getting.

Ask us
  • 01

Can you integrate with our existing LMS or student information system?

Yes. LTI is the usual route for tool integration with a learning management system, and student information systems typically expose either an API or a scheduled export. Where a system supports OneRoster or similar, roster synchronisation becomes considerably simpler.

  • 02

How do you handle exam integrity?

Through a combination of timing controls, submission integrity, activity logging and question randomisation where it suits the assessment. We would rather be direct about the limits here: no remote system makes cheating impossible, and heavy-handed proctoring carries real accessibility and privacy costs. The right balance is an institutional decision we can inform but should not make.

  • 03

What does accessibility compliance actually involve?

In practice, meeting WCAG 2.2 at AA: full keyboard operability, correct semantic structure for screen readers, sufficient contrast, captions and transcripts for media, and forms whose errors are announced rather than only shown. Designed in from the start it is close to cost-neutral, which is the main argument for not deferring it.

  • 04

How do you plan for enrolment or results-day traffic?

By load-testing against the actual expected peak rather than a comfortable multiple of average traffic, and by designing the specific paths that spike — enrolment, results lookup, submission — to scale independently of the rest of the platform.
